'You're STILL not happy!' BBC host blasts Czech minister on EU citizen rights after Brexit
BBC host Nick Robinson blasted the Czech EU secretary for using Brussels jargon and continuing to be unhappy about the national rights of his countrymen in Britain despite Theresa May making concessions. Mr Robinson took Ales Chmelar to task as he said the more than 45,000 Czech born people living in the UK had been offered “settled status” meaning they could enjoy the rights of those in Britain from other parts of the world.Speaking on the Today programme, on BBC Radio 4, the presenter accused the Czech State Secretary for European Affairs of “still not being happy”.He said: “Let’s try and avoid the Brussels jargon about this court or that. “There are more than 45,000 Czech born people living in this country, they’ve been offered what’s called settled status, which the Prime Minister says means they’ll be treated just the same as someone coming from any other part of the world. “But you’re still not happy, indeed your country and others have threatened to veto the whole deal if it doesn’t improve. “What in practical terms, worries you?”Mr Chmelar replied he wanted a guarantee British laws would not change at a later date and that it needed to be ensured by the European Court of Justice. He said: “Well in practical terms we have to guarantee that the national laws will not change so that the status of these citizens change. “In this term, it is important to have an input of the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice, so that the permanency doesn’t change, so it’s guaranteed.”Meanwhile, in a keynote Brexit address in Florence, Mrs May signed the UK up to a two-year transition period on membership terms, a sizeable divorce fee and ongoing respect for ECJ judgements. She offered concessions in some areas but she was steadfast in others, insisting that Britain will leave the single market and customs union in March 2019.The speech had been widely billed as a make-or-break attempt to unpick the deadlocked Brexit talks.. 00FastNews.
