Theresa May speech 'must reassure EU over Brexit and end attempts to divide bloc'
THERESA May should use her crucial Florence speech to end attempts to divide EU members and reassure them that Britain’s exit will not harm their security or prosperity, her former right hand man has said. Ther former aide encouraged Mrs May to back up the work she started with her Lancaster House Speech and continued when she discourage Donald Trump from encouraging the EU’s collapse.At Lancaster House in January the Prime Minister called for protections for the rights of EU nationals in the UK and a “smooth, orderly Brexit”.Mr Timothy claimed Brexit was not the top priority for Germany and the other EU powers.
He said: “Their priorities – in order – are the future of the eurozone, the integrity of the EU, the security of the continent and the extension of European trade.”However the former aide warns Mrs May that “reassurance alone will not unblock the talks”.The Prime Minister should find a new way to show the UK’s “willingness” to pay an exit bill only at a time at which the price is reasonable and a future relationship with the bloc has been agreed, he wrote. Mr Timothy also accused Chancellor Philip Hammond of failing to mention any of the potential positives of Brexit.He claimed the Chancellor and the Treasury risked harming the UK’s negotiating position and landing Britain with a bad Brexit deal by ignoring the potential benefits of a break with Brussels. Boris Johnson was also criticised for his role in “undermining” the Prime Minister by publishing his own Brexit plan.The Foreign Secretary and Chancellor were called on by Mr Timothy to support Mrs May.Both are set to appear next to the Prime Minister as the Cabinet presents a united front when Mrs May makes her speech in Florence.. 00FastNews.
