David Shepherd – legendary wildlife photographer dies DAVID SHEPHERD, one of the world’s greatest wildlife artists and conservationists, has died at the age of 86. His paintings are not only prized by art collectors but have also raised huge sums for conservation.A work titled Tiger Fire was one of his first major fund-raising successes, raising £127,000 for Indira Gandhi’s Operation Tiger in 1973. Other classic works include The Ivory is Theirs and Wise Old Elephant, Shepherd’s poignant personal statements on the plight of the planet’s largest land creature at the hands of mankind.Announcing his death today after a 10-week fight in hospital with Parkinson’s disease, the charity paid tribute to his devotion to the animals he painted.Karen Botha, the chief executive of the Surrey-based David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF), said: “David’s passion for wildlife and the role of man in its demise infuriated and inspired him. He was dedicated, tenacious and outspoken, a champion of animals and the people who worked to protect them. He will be greatly missed.” Besides wildlife paintings, Shepherd was also an accomplished portrait artist, with Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, one of his most famous studies.He was awarded an OBE in 1979 and received a CBE in 2008 for his services to conservation and was also Member of Honour of the WWF.His life as an artist and conservationist featured in several TV programmes, including the BBC’s Man Who Loves Giants and This is Your Life in 1990. His books include David Shepherd, An Artist in Conservation. One of his other great passions was steam locomotives and he once owned two 120-ton engines as well as establishing in a registered steam railway charity.He leaves a wife, four daughters, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild and an enduring legacy for wildlife conservation. His family are still very involved in the charity and his artistic talent lives on in his daughter, Mandy Shepherd and grand-daughter Emily Lamb who continue to paint to raise awareness and help DSWF fund conservation projects worldwide. . 00FastNews.
