Hurricane Maria destruction: warning 'not much will survive' - but will it hit the US?
HURRICANE MARIA demolished much of the island of Dominica when it made landfall as a Category Five hurricane last night. Hurricane Maria tore roofs off homes when the eye of the powerful storm battered parts of the Caribbean last night with 160mph winds. Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said he was left at the “complete mercy of the hurricane” after Maria ripped the roof off his home. Mr Skerrit took to social media to write: “My roof is gone. House is flooding.”The Dominican Prime Minister later spoke to CBS Miami to describe the devastation the hurricane cause as he claimed there would not be many roofs to survive the conditions.  He said: “The structure I was in was very strong, but the constant, unrelenting wind, the hurricane stayed in the country for a very long time. “The force of the wind kept getting stronger. Add to that you had very heavy rainfall. “I don’t think there are many roofs which will survive the hurricane.” After being rescued, Mr Skerrit continued his description of what had happened on Dominica.

He said: “Initial reports are of widespread devastation… So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace.“My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.”Maria was the most powerful storm to strike the island since David in 1979. Residents in the US and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are now preparing for Maria as it is expected to hit across Tuesday night and Wednesday. Both the British and US Virgin Islands are forecast to receive as much as 20 inches of rainfall as Maria continues follow a similar path of Hurricane Irma. The latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory said: "Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides from heavy rainfall are expected across the Leeward Islands, including Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands.”Hurricane Maria is currently located about 45 miles west-northwest of Dominica and 235 miles southeast of St Croix - one of the US Virgin Islands.Whilst looking at spaghetti models of the storm, Meteorologist Chris Zelman said that the track of Hurricane Maria depends on its interaction with Hurricane Jose, which currently sits of the east coast of the US. He said: “The story is the east coast, how does [Hurricane Maria] effect it? Right now the chance of it coming directly across the east coast is pretty unlikely. The reason is the interaction with Jose.”. 00FastNews. Please Subscribe!
