Hurricane Maria video update: powerful winds batter Guadeloupe as storm lashes Caribbean
HURRICANE MARIA has left a swath of devastation in the Carribean with shocking video capturing the sheer force of the storm in Guadeloupe. Hurricane Maria has caused severe damage as the Prime Minister of Dominica said there was “widespread devastation” in the Caribbean. The path of the Category Four storm also crashed into Basse-Terre, the capital of capital of Guadeloupe just weeks after Irma hit the Caribbean and United States. In the shocking footage, winds can be seen battering a car park in Basse-Terre with trees and lamp posts shaking in the intense conditions.The video, posted online from the French local authorities said: “Winds are extremely violent. Stay confined. Don't go out under any circumstances.” Winds of 160mph (260kmph) were reported in hitting Dominica when the storm made landfall, according to the Trinidad and Tobago weather centre.According to the latest NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) update, Hurricane Maria is forecast to remain extremely dangerous as it approaches the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, the US Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Culebra, and Vieques.Hurricane Maria was upgraded to a category 5 hurricane just hours from striking Dominica at 8pm EDT. Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit had to be rescued from his roofless home.He took to social media to write: “My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding.”A 2am update from the NOAA, said: “Maria is moving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through Wednesday.“On the forecast track, the eye of Maria will move over the northeastern Caribbean Sea today, and approach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and Wednesday.
“Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km).”The Hurricane was downgraded to a category 4 storm but fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or two. Fears are growing over whether the huge storm could reach mainland US over the next five days as several possible tracks show the storm reaching the east coast or out over the Atlantic.Chris Zelman, a chief meteorologist said that the track of the storm depends on its interaction with Hurricane Jose, which currently sits of the east coast of the US. He said: “The story is the east coast, how does [Hurricane Maria] effect it? Right now the chance of it coming directly across the east coast is pretty unlikely. The reason is the interaction with Jose. “You can see Jose up here just lurking. What we are going to see is the Fujiwhara effect. These two systems will rotate around that point. You can see just as much weaker now Jose is now by the time we get into next week. “This interaction between Maria and Jose will be key in keeping Maria away from us the stronger of the two systems.”. 00FastNews.
