ISLAMABAD: A demonstration is to be held in Aabpara area of the federal capital today to protest against persecution of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
In an anticipation of big protest demonstration, the city administration has blocked all entry routes into Red Zone to avert any untoward incident and potential move by the rally’s participants.
As many as 7,500 personnel of the federal police have been deployed along the route of the protest rally.
Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Sirajul Haq is expected to lead the party rally.
The protest call has been given by various political and religious parties which have backing of civil society members and students groups.
To ensure smooth flow of traffic, Islamabad Traffic Police have issued an alternate route plan for commuters.
On the other hand, Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal has urged the protesters to remain peaceful.
In a statement, he said: “Pakistan’s standing in the world will be hurt in case of any incident of violence in the Red Zone.”
He laid emphasis on Pakistan’s national duty to safeguard diplomatic missions.
Meantime, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) has also announced to hold a rally over the issue in Lahore around 3:00 pm today. The party will protest in front of the Lahore Press Club.
It is worth mentioning here that nearly 150,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since August 25 in the aftermath of recent clashes between Rohingya militants and Myanmar army.
The number of those killed during the clashes and in the military operation in the country is still obscure.
