Hollywood No Match for Mayweather vs. McGregor LOS ANGELES — Movie theaters were open over the weekend, but it was hard to tell by ticket sales, which were held back by lethargic new movies, competition from a pay-per-view boxing match and Hurricane Harvey. The indie comedy “The Big Sick” (Lionsgate) collected $745,000 in its 10th weekend of release, pushing total ticket sales to roughly $40 million. To find a lower top-12 total, you have to go back to 2001, when the Sept. 11 attacks resulted in mid-September weekend ticket sales of about $43.5 million, according to data from Box Office Mojo. “Wind River,” a mystery written and directed by Taylor Sheridan (“Hell or High Water”), expanded into more locations in its fourth weekend and took in $4.4 million, according to the Weinstein Company, which released the film.
