Betsy DeVos straddles the fence on LGBT issues at schools
  • 7 years ago
At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Besty DeVos stumbled when addressing LGBT issues in private schools. Back in a House hearing in May, DeVos refused to confirm or deny whether federal funding would be taken from schools who discriminate against LGBT students. The current federal laws protect students from discrimination based on race, color, nationality, gender, and disability but have not yet included sexual orientation. DeVos used this in her argument, and stated the following: “[It's an issue for] Congress and the courts to settle. On areas where the law is unsettled, this department is not going to be issuing decrees.” After saying states should be left to decide where LGBT students fall in federal protections, she expressed that "discrimination is wrong in any form"
