US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday, April 12, said the relations between the US and Russia were “at a low point” and the two countries remained divided on a range of issues, including Syria.Tillerson’s comments came at a press conference following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.Tillerson said President Donald Trump’s administration was of the view that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “cannot stay in power.”Lavrov, who was co-hosting the April 12 press conference in Moscow, said progress had been made on Syria and a working group would be established to improve communication between the US and Russia, Reuters reported. Lavrov also said Moscow was ready to revive an air safety agreement in Syria. The agreement was suspended after the US launched its first attack on Syria during the country’s six-year conflict last week. The strikes came after a chemical attack killed 89 people in the opposition-held Idlib Governorate. The US blamed the Assad regime for the attack and accused Russia of trying to cover it up.
