GONAIVES, HAITI — A bus plowed into a crowd of people participating in a parade in Haiti on Sunday, killing at least 34 people.

The incident took place at 3.a.m. in Gonaives, a city some 150 km northwest of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The bus first plowed into two pedestrians at a bus stop, killing one and injuring another. The driver then rammed the bus into a crowd of people attending a Rara parade while he tried to flee, killing 34 people. The Rara parade is a traditional Haitian street music festival.

“The people who were not victims of the accident tried to burn the bus with the passengers inside,” Faustin Joseph, civic protection coordinator for the department of Artibonite told AFP.

Police initially said they had detained the bus driver, but several news outlets have reported that the driver had fled the scene and has not been found.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.
