Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced that North Korean embassy officials and staff are barred from leaving Malaysia.
The move followed Pyongyang imposing a temporary ban on Malaysians in North Korea from leaving the republic.
Eleven Malaysians are believed to be in North Korea, three embassy staff, two staff of a United Nations aid programme and their family members.
