Former BYU coach LaVell Edwards passed away Thursday at the age of 86 due to complications from breaking his hip. His wife, Patti Edwards, told the Provo Daily Herald he sustained the injury on Christmas Eve. Edwards built an everlasting legacy while he was head coach of the BYU football team for 29 years, winning a national title in 1989, as well as two national coach of the year awards. I love LaVell Edwards. He came into my life, and the life of many others, at just the right time,” BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe said in a press release. “I had the influence of a great coach, a wonderful person, a disciple of Christ, a loyal family man and a true friend, from the day I met him until the day he passed away.
