Metallica - Live at Fox Theater Oakland CA 2016 - Highlights

Metallica finds its way home at Fox Oakland show.

Twenty years ago, Metallica remerged in public to release their “Load” album, having uniformly shorn their long hair.
Based on the 1996 fan freakout that followed, the band had faded to black with no chance to repair their reputation. No doubt, any 2016 version would have backup singers and a horn section, the mosh pit a distant memory.
That’s not how it turned out, as Metallica proved once again at Fox Theatre in Oakland on Saturday night, in a tune-up for a “Hard Wired … to Self-Destruct” tour to be named later.
The Bay Area group played three songs from their new throwback album, and didn’t play another chord from a song released after 1991. The Fox, with its 1920s architecture, is too big and lavish to feel like one of the grungy old San Francisco clubs that Metallica got started in, such as the Old Waldorf or The Stone. But the band confirmed it can still bring some of that youthful ferocity, even as its members settle into their 50s.
If the Fox show lacked something, it was the spontaneity of those old club performances, where the band might do anything for its young and unpredictable crowd.
