Los Angeles to build biogas-fueled electricity plant to power wastewater treatment plant

LOS ANGELES — A biogas-fueled cogeneration power plant will soon to supply energy to power a water reclamation plant in Los Angeles.
The 25-megawatt cogeneration plant is expected to generate more than 173 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year and up to 70,000 pounds per hour of steam, all the energy needed to power Los Angeles’s Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, the city’s largest.
The cogeneration plant will be built by Constellation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation.
A cogeneration power plant produces steam heat and electricity simultaneously and is more efficient than other kinds of power plants and boilers.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the plants can achieve up to 90 percent energy efficiency, whereas conventional power plants often achieve just 33 percent, as most of the heat energy is wasted.
