Nigerian security forces have killed nearly 100 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and injured scores of them. An IMN statement says the death toll could be higher as police evacuated many bodies from the shooting site near the city of Kano. Those killed were among mourners holding a peaceful march ahead of the Shia commemoration of Arba’een. Soldiers tried to disperse the IMN rally, firing tear gas and randomly targeting participants. The attack comes despite a letter by Nigeria’s Islamic Human Rights Commission that had called for the safety of the IMN Arba’een commemorations. Followers of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have been under heavy-handed crackdown since last year when the army attacked a religious ceremony in their stronghold of Zaria. Hundreds were killed and many, including the movement’s leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, were thrown behind bars.
