CHIANG MAI, THAILAND — Two adorable Thai girls were accused of being stealing from tourists in a Reddit post, but the girls and their parents say it was all a lie.

The Reddit post made by a since-deleted user, MedardBoss, was headlined “Girlfriend in progress of having her watch stolen,” and included an image of two small Thai girls in matching traditional Thai outfits posing with a woman at the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Both girls, later identified as Thidaret and Kanlayanee aged 10 and 7, are holding onto the woman’s arms. One girl has her fingers around the backside of the woman’s wrist watch.

One user asked if the poster had noticed the missing watch during their visit. To which, the poster wrote that they didn’t notice until they looked through photos and that the one picture solved the mystery. The poster later wrote that his girlfriend was “a bit drunk tbh.”

Many users chimed in, saying that the girls’ actions of touching the woman’s arms was actually a skilled pickpocket technique.

But another user claiming to the unnamed woman in the photo said that the story wasn’t true, and the photo was taken from her Facebook page without permission.

Police tracked down the girls’ parents and questioned them. The parents denounced the allegations and explained that the girls, who visited the temple after school and on weekends, were happy to only take donations for posing in photos. They used the money for food, clothing and their education.

Police have said that no formal complaint has been filed regarding the missing watch.
