History :
Airedale Terrier was developed in the mid 19th century and was named after the Airedale, a valley in the West riding of Yorkshire, where the breed was developed. The breed was developed by crossing between Welsh Terrier (rough coated black and tan terrier) with Otter-hound.

Initially the hunter used to accompany packs of hounds and terriers, running together while hunting. The hounds were good at sensing the game and would pursue them while the terriers used to enter the burrow and kill the quarry. The Airedale Terriers were developed with the purpose of creating a dog, which could scent and pursue the game as well as make the kill by entering the burrow. This newly developed breed had the tenacity of the terrier and scenting skills of a hound. Soon the breed gained popularity as a very effective sporting breed.
