SOS Children's Villages International wins Princess of Asturias Award for Concord

Oviedo, Spain, Sep 6 (EFE) .- SOS Children's Villages International organization won on Tuesday the 2016 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.
SOS, which works in 134 countries to provide support for vulnerable children and young adults, was nominated for the award by 33-year-old Spanish basketball player Amaya Valdemoro.
Pedro Puig, head of the NGO's Spanish branch, told EFE that this award is an acknowledgment of the efforts exerted by many children and young people to overcome the difficulties they face in life.
SOS Children's Villages International was established in 1949 by German Hermann Gmeiner and is dedicated to abandoned and destitute children who require family based care.
It provides some 50,000 children and 15,000 young adults with a permanent new family.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are a series of annual prizes awarded in Spain by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in eight categories: arts, communication and humanities, international cooperation, literature, social sciences, sports, technical and scientific research, and concord. EFE
