CITRONELLE, ALABAMA — A man massacred five people in their Alabama home his past weekend, leaving behind a crime scene of blood and gore that investigators say was one of the most disturbing they’ve ever seen.

NBC reports that early Saturday morning, Derrick Dearman broke into the house and viciously murdered its occupants, one of whom was five months pregnant. Authorities believe Dearman used multiple weapons to carry out the killing, possibly using a firearm and an axe.

Dearman’s estranged girlfriend Laneta Lester had been staying in the house to escape their abusive relationship. Police received a call from the residence earlier in the night to report that Dearman had been trespassing on the property. The suspect left before police arrived, but came back later and attacked the victims while they were sleeping.

Lester was spared, along with the 3-month-old baby of one of the victims.

After the killings, Dearman forced the two survivors into a car and fled the scene. From Citronelle, Alabama, Dearman drove to his father’s house in Leakesville, Mississippi and let the two hostages go.

His father accompanied him to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, where he turned himself in.

According to AL.com, the 27-year-old suspect is facing six counts of murder for the slaying of Shannon Randall, Joseph Adam Turner, Robert Lee Brown, Kaleb and Chelsea Reed, and their unborn baby.
