Canadians outraged at mining company’s use of bikini models in ads

TORONTO — A promotional video by a Canadian mining company featuring bikini-clad models is making waves in America’s Hat.

The video, posted to KWG Resources’ YouTube page, features Theresa Longo and a woman named “Ashley.” The video is part of a series called “Mining Minutes,” which was created by Longo. It promotes the Ontario mineral deposit Ring of Fire.

Longo and Ashley are wearing bikinis in various scenes throughout the video, which features several vertigo-inducing transitions, and it’s this that’s irked many of Canada’s politically correct and sensitive types.

Responding to the criticism, KWG President Frank Smeenk told the CBC that “sex sells.” He also said it’s a way of using social media to reach a whole new generation.

According to her website, Longo is an international model and strategic marketing and planning expert. Reacting to the media coverage, she wrote in a Facebook post that she “loved” the publicity generated by the video.

“No one used used as props, or told us to make this one minute video and we weren’t even trying to be sexy!” Longo said.
