‘Neerja' Movie Review By Pankhurie Mulasi | Sonam Kapoor, Shabana Azmi

I’m sure that most of you must be knowing about the story of the film but for all those who don’t, this film is a biopic on the life of model-turned-airhostess Neerja Bhanot, who displayed extra-ordinary courage and sacrificed her life while saving the lives of passengers from terrorists on board the high jacked PAN Am Flight 73 on September 5, 1986.
Film aapko sirf plane mein hi nahi rakhti wo apko Neerja ke personal life ki bhi jhalkiyaan dikhati hai jis se aapko paat chalta hai ki wo diler ladhki asal mein kitni zindadil. The film also talks about her abusive arranged marriage aur film dekhne ke baad aap ye sochengey ki aaj Neerja ki pati ki chehre par lanat zarur hogi.
Let’s talk about acting. Sonam Kapoor has given her career best performance in the movie. This role it seems was tailor made for her aur film dekhtey huey aapko lagega ki aap sonam ko nahi screen pe neerja ko hi dekh rahey. She is sublime, effervescent and has put in a terrific act and she will certainly be one of the top contenders in the best actress category in all awards functions next year.
Shabana Azmi, who is playing Neerja’s mother, has done full justice to her role aur apni beti ko kho dene par ek mar pa jo beetati hai un emotions ko unhone bahut hi achi tarah se parde pe laya hai. Yogendra Tikku has played Neerja’s father and he has done an outstanding job. In fact the actors, who have played terrorists too have done a commendable job aur unhe dekhtey huey aapko lagega ki aap sach mein aatankwadiyon ko hi dekh rahey hai. Shekhar Ravjiani is playing Neerja’s love interest and he is good in his short and sweet role.
Ram Madhvani has shot the film so well that you will feel that you are not watching but actually experiencing the entire tragic incident. This incident happened a long time ago aur mere jaise log, who were not even born back then, unhe Neerja ke baarey mein shayad hi pata tha. This is a story which needed to be told and the makers have done full justice to the life of our braveheart.
Despite knowing the story, the screenplay is so gripping that you will constantly be on the edge of you seat, with a lump in your throat. You pray for Neerja’s life despite knowing how it will conclude. Is film ne Neerja Bhanot ke baarey mein itni awareness paida ki hai ki theatre ke baahar khadhi bheedh ko dekh ke mujhe laga jaise main kisi khan ki film dekhney aayi hu.
The music of the film is soothing and helps build the screenplay.
Ye film ek tamacha hai un logo ke liye jo mazhab aur sarhodon ke naam pe khoon bahatey hai, jo apni betiyon ko beton se kam samjhtey hai aur unpe bhi jo auraton ko dahej ke liye mentally aur physically torture kartey hai.
I will give this film a rating of 5 stars because this is not a figment of someone’s imagination, it’s a tale of extraordinary courage, which tells us about the heroism of a 23-year-old girl. It tells you to always be brave and to never compromise on your self-respect.
Everybody should go and watch this film, kyunki bharat ki us veer beti ko aap shayad isi tarah tribute de payein.
