High school senior with 4.5 GPA forced into street begging for college money

LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS — A high school student has taken to panhandling to raise money for college.
Eighteen-year-old Emily Stutz has been asking for donations in front of her local Target in Lowell, Massachusetts, to help fund her way through medical school. The senior has been maintaining a 4.0 to 4.5 GPA while taking on part-time jobs, often two at a time, while attending school.
Now, months before graduation, Stutz is facing the difficult decision of what school to attend. But, unlike her peers, Stutz is in a unique situation. She can't afford college, let alone medical school.
While Stutz did receive some scholarship money, ranging from $11,000 to $18,000 at various schools that accepted her, she received no additional financial aid. And to make matters worse, her parents don't qualify as cosigners to any student loans.
So the teen took to social media and panhandling. Stutz created a GoFundMe campaign sharing her story. So far she's raised over $15,000 through the crowd-funding website. She also stood outside her local Target with a group of friends.
"If people will give to the 'homeless' panhandlers then maybe they will consider sparing a dollar or some change to an aspiring doctor who has all the academic, but no financial means to attend college," wrote Stutz. "Anything helps at this point!"
