Born in 1969, the Argentinian who during his six-year spell with Real Madrid (1994-2000) won two Spanish titles and twice the Champions League combined the outstanding passing ability of a deep-lying playmaker in the Guardiola/Xavi/Kroos mould with the excellent positioning and physicality of a typical Number Six and therefore was rightly regarded as the World`s finest example of a holding midfielder during much of the 1990s.
