The Congos are one of the most extraordinary names of the roots reggae from the seventies. The vocal band was composed of Cedric Myton, Roy Johnson and Watty Burnett. Actually, the Congos were a duo and it was Lee Perry's great idea to add Watty Burnett's baritone. Lee Perry started to produce their extraordinary vocal sections, mixing them with his peculiar sounds.
From the first songs like 'Congo man' and 'Ark of the covenant' on, it was evident that the voices of the Congos and Lee Perry's dense and mystical sound were a very good match. It was a big disappointment when Scratch accepted Chris Blackwell's decision not to distribute their fantastic album 'The heart of Congos' under his Island Records. The album was released under Lee Perry's personal label and became one of the symbols of masterpieces of the Jamaican roots, loved by collectors but unknown to the majority of the public.
The group continued its career with more magnificent albums like 'Congo Ashanti' and 'Image of Africa'. In 1996, fortunately, Blood & Fire re-published 'The heart of Congos' on CD, giving the Congos popularity once again. This lead to a new series of concerts and records, based on their legendary fame of the seventies.
