Dad clings to moving school bus in route dispute with driver

BOSTON — A school bus driver was placed on administrative leave after video of a man clinging to the side of his vehicle was posted to Facebook. The incident occurred on March 31 following changes to the school bus' route. The dispute was over where the bus was supposed to stop. When the bus, full of children, did not pull up where parents thought it would, father James "Mikey" Burdett was caught on camera hanging onto the vehicle's side mirror. "When I tried to talk to [the driver] he wouldn't open the door so I stood in front of the bus and put my hand out and said: 'Just listen I want my daughter that's it,'" Burdett told CBS Boston. "And [when] I said it the first time he just pressed on the gas." As the bus moved down the street, Burdett could be heard screaming, "Hey, I'm just trying to get my daughter off the bus." Burdett later told CBS Boston that his daughter was standing behind the driver saying, "Please stop, that's my dad." Bystanders also screamed for the bus driver to stop. But the bus driver told police it was Burdett who was acting dangerously. A police report says the driver claimed Burdett "started punching on the glass on the door" and the driver didn't stop because "he felt as though it was not a safe environment for the children on the bus and himself," according to CBS Boston. The driver also showed police his list of stops, which did not include the intersection where the incident occurred. Boston Public Schools has placed the driver on paid leave, stating the district "does not tolerate any kind of behavior that places people's lives in danger or compromises public safety," CBS Boston reported. An investigation is ongoing and the driver will remain on leave pending its outcome.
