James MacMillan is one of Britain’s foremost contemporary composers, creating eclectic music along avant-garde, minimalist and neoromantic lines of musical thought. A fervent Catholic, his music has been constantly inspired by his religious faith, especially by Liberation Theology. His First Symphony “Vigil” is the final part of his Easter Triduum, comprising thus Holy Saturday’s Vigil Mass, in which the Resurrection of Christ is awaited. MacMillan plays with sound representing the “Pagan” elements of Light and Water which are present during the Mass, but also it showcases a linear narrative of the events before the removal of the stone at Christ’s Sepulcher; a moment in which both ecstasy and mystery are evident.
James MacMillan es uno de los compositores más prominentes de la época contemporánea en Gran Bretaña, creando un estilo ecléctico bajo líneas musicales vanguardistas, minimalistas y neorrománticas. Siendo un ferviente católico, su música siempre ha estado inspirada por su fe religiosa, especialmente por la Teología de la Liberación. Su Primera Sinfonía “Vigilia” es la parte final de su Triduo Pascual, comprendiendo entonces la Misa de Gloria del Sábado por la noche. MacMillan juega con el sonido que representa a los elementos “paganos” de la luz y del agua, presentes en la misa, pero también muestra una narrativa de los eventos precediendo al retiro de la piedra del Sepulcro de Cristo; un momento en el que tanto el éxtasis como el misterio se vuelven presentes.
