Detective 'triggered' by poop-covered prisoner awarded €35,000 in damages for PTSD

DUBLIN — A police detective was awarded €35,000 euros in damages by an Irish court on Tuesday after a prisoner put his own poop in his mouth, smeared it all over himself — and then got in her face.
Garda detective Linda Harkin, 39, suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and short-term anorexia following the dirty protest in 2005.
The prisoner had refused to cooperate when he was brought to Cavan Garda Station for questioning in June 2005 over a gangland murder, the Irish Independent reported.
However, Harkin told her barrister Frank Martin that the prisoner had not caused trouble when she accompanied him on a confined recreation walk and brought food to his cell.
On the second day of his detention, the prisoner requested a cup of tea, which Harkin brought to his cell, the Irish High Court heard.
When she later went to check on him, Harkin was shocked to find the prisoner's face and mouth covered in excrement.
Almost nose-to-nose with the prisoner through his cell hatch, Harkin saw that his teeth were covered in excrement and he was trying to swallow the poop.
Harkin feared that the prisoner would spit excrement at her. She told Mr. Justice Bernard Barton she felt sick and ran to a sink to where she vomited, the Irish Independent reported.
Ruling in the case, Barton said the prisoner had tried to mentally harm Harkin. Awarding Harkin €35,000 in damages, the judge agreed the detective had suffered PTSD as a result of the filthy attack.
