DAMASCUS — Bombings in the Syrian cities of Damascus and Homs killed claimed the lives of 140 people and wounded at least 178 on Sunday, the BBC reported.

Islamic State militants exploded a car bomb and explosive belts in the Damascus suburb of Sayyida Zeinab on Sunday, the BBC reported, citing Amqa, an Islamic State-linked news agency. The attack killed 83 people and injured 178.

According to NPR, earlier explosions from twin car bombs killed 57 people in the Zahraa district of Homs.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the the bombings through instant messaging app Telegram, CNN reported.

The attacks happened as U.S. and Russia this weekend said progress toward a deal for a ceasefire in Syria had been made. The country's civil war has claimed the lives of thousands of Syrians and displaced millions across the Middle East and Europe.
