Police brutality: Delhi police attack peaceful student protesters
  • 8 years ago
NEW DELHI — A peaceful protest held by university students over the weekend turned extremely violent at the hands of Delhi police. The protest was being held to raise awareness surrounding the recent death of a student at Hyderabad University.

Rohith Vemula, 26, was a Ph.D. student and research scholar who committed suicide on Jan. 17. Shortly prior to his death, he was suspended by the university for involvement in an assault that many of his peers say was baseless and fabricated. A national outcry over the incident has sparked, with many believing accusations against Vemula were caste-driven.

Students marched in solidarity to bring awareness to the injustice, but their efforts resulted in what some are calling a form of police brutality. Caught on camera, protesters walked and chanted, when Delhi police begin violently assaulting the students, both men and women, using bodily force and weapons alike.

In response to the incident, police say the protesters had broken barricades, thrown sticks, and charged at them. Journalists on the ground disagree, and say there was no provocation on behalf of the students.
