Sweden to expel up to 80,000 refugees amid Europe migrants crisis

STOCKHOLM — Sweden plans to reject between 60,000 to 80,000 applications from people who applied for asylum last year, Anders Ygeman, the country's interior minister, told Swedish media on Thursday, according to a report in the Guardian.

Sweden, which has a population of 9.8 million people, received more than 160,000 asylum applications last year, the largest number per capita in the EU, the BBC reported.

Two thirds of those who seek asylum in Sweden come from Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq, according to Swedish media reports.

Sweden's interior ministry said on Thursday that specially chartered planes will be used to return the migrants to their countries of origin, the Guardian reported.

According to figures from the Swedish Migration Agency cited by the Daily Telegraph, the number of violent incidents at asylum facilities in Sweden more than doubled from 2014 to 2015.

Earlier this week, a 15-year-old asylum seeker was arrested in Molndal after he allegedly stabbed a 22-year-old asylum center employee to death.
