Mexican officials play musical jail cells with El Chapo

MEXICO CITY — Fearing that the world's most wanted drug lord will escape a third time, the Mexican government has beefed up security to ensure he stays put.

Reuters reports that federal policemen and armored vehicles have been patrolling the perimeter of Altiplano prison in central Mexico since Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was returned there following the authorities' dramatic recapture of him in Los Mochis on Friday.

To avoid a repeat of his escape by tunnel from Altiplano in July, Guzman's cell floors have been reinforced with steel rods and cement, and two armed guards stand watch outside the cell twenty four hours a day, according to Mexican newspaper Milenio.

Additional security measures in the prison include reducing the number of inmates, quadrupling the number of surveillance cameras and moving the drug lord randomly and without warning to different parts of the facility. Mexico government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told Reuters that Guzman has been in eight different cells in Altiplano so far.

People entering the prison likewise have to go through strict security, with new scanners installed. Outside, new motion detectors and cameras are also in place, Milenio reported.

Officials from Mexico's National Security Commission told reporters that with the added security, Altiplano now complies with international standards, according to Reuters.

However, an unnamed interior ministry security official told Reuters that the problem with housing criminals like El Chapo lies in the possibility that he could easily buy off the prison staff and escape once more.
