Akbar was the Mughal King and Birbal was the (Wazir-e Azam) of the Mughal court in the administration of the Mughal emperor Akbar. He was one of his most trusted members along with being a part of Akbar's inner council of nine advisors, known as the navaratna, a Sanskrit word meaning nine jewels. Birbal was one of only a few persons other than Akbar that were Din-i-Ilahi believers.
Birbal's duties in Akbar's court were mostly military and administrative, but he was also a very close friend of the emperor, who appreciated Birbal for his wit and wisdom, often involving humorous exchanges. These and other stories have become part of a rich tradition of folklore and legend.

एक दिन शाही इरान के राजदूत अगबर से मिलने आते हैं । उनके साथ शाही इरान अगबर केलिए तोफा भेजते हैं । तोफे मैं शाही इरान शाहजान को पिंजरे मैं एक नकली शेर भेजते हैं । असल मैं शाही इरान तोफे के रूप मैं शाहजान को पहेली सुलझाने कि चिनौती देते हैं । चिनौती ये थी कि पिंजरे और शेर को छुए बिना पिंजरा खाली करना था । इस चिनौती को पूरा करने केलिए सिर्फ तिन मौके दिए थे । एक आदमी को एक मौका दिया जाएगा । तभी शाहजान बीरबल को ये पहेली सुलझाने को कहते हैं पर तभी सुखदेव कहते हैं कि हमेशा बीरबल को ही क्यों मौका मिले हमें भी एक मौका मिलना चाहिए । इसलिए शाहजान सुखदेव का पहले पहेली सुलझाने का मौका देते हैं । सुखदेव शाहजान से कहते हैं कि मैंने जादूगर जादूराम को हमारा मनोरन्जन करने बुलाया हैं । वो इस देश के सबसे बड़े जादूगर हैं । मुज़े पूरा यकीन हैं कि वो इस पहेली सुलझायेंगे । पर जादूराम ये पहेली सुलझा नहीं पाता । तभी दिलेरसिंग भी पहेली सुलझाने एक मौका माँगते हैं । वो ओझा काली बाबू को दरबार मैं बुलाते हैं । ओझा काली बाबू रूहानी ताकतो का मालिक था । पर उनसे बू ये पहेली सुलझ नहीं पाते । अभी एक मौका बचा था । इसलिए शाहजान बीरबल को ये पहेली सुलझाने को कहते हैं ।
