We Love Vernantes - Ron Scheffer - Bob Erwig 2007
On holidays in France in October we visited several chateaux with B&B accommodation. With the help of the internet we found a castle, Chateau de Loroux, in the Loire region near Saumur, which was near a place called Vernantes.
My old friend Ron Scheffer, who plays piano and trumpet, together with his French partner Martine had retired near Limoges, not too far from Vernantes and they decided to join us for an overnight stay at the Chateau. The evening of their arrival they took us for a fabulous dinner in Saumur and when we returned at the Chateau we found out that Monsieur Foisy, the Chatelain, was a jazz lover and he invited us to play a few tunes when he found out that Ron and I could play.
In the magnificent drawing room stood an old 19th century grand piano ready to be used. By itself the piano was not unreasonably out of tune, but unfortunately it was tuned half a tone too sharp. The only way we could handle it was that I would play cornet in Ab and Ron would play piano in G. We were almost in tune together. We decided on an old standard called Careless Love Blues and our Chatelain smilingly agreed.
It was more the ambiance of the situation than the quality of our effort. We all had dined with a lot of darn good wine and the effects might be slightly noticible. Alltogether, a soiree to remember.
Ilse kept the camcorder rolling and here is Careless Love in “GAb.”
