Birmingham mayor and city councilor get into fist fight at city council meeting

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA — The mayor of Birmingham, Alabama and a city councilor were taken to the hospital after fighting at a city council meeting on Tuesday.

Staff for Mayor William Bell, 66, said he suffered a sprained knee, crushed vocal cord and a contusion in the altercation with City Councilor Marcus Lundy, 48, which took place behind closed doors.

The fight began at around 10 a.m. and forced a city council meeting to be adjourned, WVTM reported.

Witnesses told WVTM they heard shouting before the incident, but it remains unclear what the fight was about.

The two men went into a back room to talk about a city-related matter, according to several reports.

Mayor Bell told police Lundy started to change the subject and tried to talk to him about a personal issue, AL.com reported.

The mayor reportedly tried to leave when the conversation became heated. Lundy allegedly prevented Bell from leaving the room before putting his hands around his neck. And that's when all hell broke loose.

Both men were taken to hospital to be checked for injuries. Photos of Lundy showed scratches to his leg.

Bell has filed a charge for third-degree assault against Lundy, but the councilor plans to file a counter charge, according to WHNT.
