More Muslim pilgrims are pouring into Iraq’s holy city of Karbala to mark Arba’een, the fortieth day after the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam.

The holy city, home to Imam Hussein’s shrine, has already received millions of pilgrims from across the globe. Many of them have reached the Iraqi city on foot to observe Arba’een on Thursday. Thousands of Iraqi troops are deployed to Karbala to ensure security during the Arba’een rituals. The event comes forty days after Ashura when Imam Hussein and his 72 companions were martyred during the battle of Karbala some 14 centuries ago. Every year, Muslims across the world hold mourning ceremonies on Ashura and Arba’een to commemorate Imam Hussein’s martyrdom.
