#BrusselsLockdown hashtag leads to Belgian cat meme explosion on Twitter

BRUSSELS — A manhunt to track down suspected terrorist Salah Abdeslam and others involved in the November 13th attacks on Paris continues. Despite the dark times of the past two weeks, a touch of fun finally entered the narrative in the social media arena.

With reasons to believe more plots could unfold at any moment, authorities in Brussels requested the public to refrain from sharing information about police operations in the city, so as not to tip off the suspected terrorists. On Twitter, the hashtag #BrusselsLockdown was initially filtering news updates, but in true internet fashion, it began filtering cats.

It supposedly all started when a local cameraman named Hugo Janssen tweeted out "Instead of tweets about police activity in Brussels, here's a picture of our cat Mozart." Soon after, others decided to keep the kitty theme going, posting pictures of their own cats, with some comedic commentary sprinkled in. Some chose to toy with the idea of playing it safe and laying low, while others opted to take aim at the terrorists themselves.

In a short burst of time, the funny felines have demonstrated yet again why they're still champions of internet popularity. And even as Brussels remains on high-alert during the third day of a city-wide lockdown, the Belgian tweeters were able to bring some laughter, following several days of tears shed across the world.
