Machete-wielding jewel thieves' crime spree stopped by a single tackle

LONDON — Three men are facing jail time for an epic string of armed robberies targeting money transfer and jewelry shops, stopped only by an heroic tackle from a brave shop manager. Newly released video captured that crucial moment.

Over the course of a year, Alex Parle, Connor Gartland, and Thomas O'Connor plundered seven shops in two cities, making off with £500,000 ($760,000) worth of expensive watches and jewelry, reports the BBC.

Their crime spree ended last January, just after robbing a luxury watch shop in London's Liverpool Street, when a man sees one of the robbers fleeing and jumps on him.

Surveillance footage shows the trio arriving outside Carr Watches and Diamonds disguised in helmets and gloves. Gartland and O'Conner smash their way into the store with a concrete block and sledgehammer, while Parle acts as lookout outside, according to the City of London Police.

As the group escapes on scooter with the stolen watches, an unmarked police car blocks their path, causing one scooter to swerve out of the way and preventing Parle from getting on.

The shop's manager, smartly dressed in a suit, chases after him and bravely tackles him before the 6ft 7inch robber pulls out a machete and swings it around.

Parle threatened a plainclothes police officer with his machete before running off. He was later arrested, reports the International Business Times.
