Two types of malanin are present in birds: eumelanin and phaeomelanin.

Leucism is defined as a partial or total lack of both malanin's in the feathers as a result of inherited disorder of the deposition of those pigments in the feathers.

Albinism is defined as a total lack of both melanin's in feathers, eyes, and skin.
