In the United States, the highly controversial debate about the Iran nuclear deal has mobilised many high-profile opinion makers on both sides of the issue. Drumming up support for the agreement is Sandy Berger, one of several former top Washington foreign policy architects to do so, together with Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft. Always in close touch with the White House, Berger supported the Iran deal in op-eds and public debates, “warning members of Congress that the idea of a “better deal” is a chimera”:http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/04/the-fantasy-of-a-better-iran-deal-116676, an illusory option, that should not lull the US into thinking there is another agreement to be had if only Washington were to bear down harder. In Washington, Berger spoke to Euronews about the deal’s chances of being cleared by Congress, about the deal’s risks to US foreign policy and about its potential to divide America and Europe.
