This year's El Niño is likely to be one of the strongest ever recorded.
El Niños are formed by uncommonly warm Pacific Ocean waters. Such temperature increases can alter weather patterns on a global scale.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, this year the waters of the Pacific are expected to be warmer than usual.
This could result in parts of Asia suffering through acute droughts while some parts of North America are subject to exceptionally strong rains and flooding.
