Greece: New Democracy tries to win back lost conservative support

Greece’s September snap election is fast approaching and New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis is on the campaign trail, holding a rally in central Athens trying to lure back traditional centre-right voters.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras remains favourite to win, but polls put the two leaders less than 4 percentage points apart.

One supporter said Meimarakis speaks the language of the ordinary folk. “He doesn’t lie, he doesn’t make false promises and he can be a better prime minister than Mr. Tsipras.”

Another held the view that support ofr Syriza was waning: “I think the people became disillusioned with SYRIZA after the imposition of the capital controls. I believe the tide is turning towards New Democracy.”

Tuesday’s rally was in front of New Democracy’s old HQ which was abandoned when the party was last in government. Now its being used to woo the party’s old conservative core back to the fold.
