LLOYD PARKS & THE PIONEERS live @ Main Stage 2015

The Pioneers are an important part of the history of Jamaican music. Their career began in 1962, and has lasted more than 53 years, with various line-ups of the vocal group. Formed by the brothers Sydney and Derrick Crooks, the original Pioneers recorded some self produced singles, released on the label Carltone, without much success.

The arrival of Jackie Robinson as vocalist and their association with Joe Gibbs would lead to great things, like the hits “Longshot”, “Catch the Beam” and “Pan Yu Machete”, recorded in the frenetic style of the period so loved by the skin heads in England. A subsequent phase in the group’s history, working with the Chinese producer Leslie Kong, brought the group the biggest success of their career, “Long Shot Kick the Bullet”.

In the wake of this success. The Pioneers moved to England, where they rerecorded their classic “Starvation”, associating its name with the Guayanese artist Eddie Grant.
