No Fire Zone: Civil society to lead anti-Rajapaksa campaign

July 25, Kuala Lumpur: Lawyers For Liberty a human rights and law reform initiative held a screening of a documentary film that exposes the human rights abuses of the Sri Lanka government in their war against the separatist movement, Tamil Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The film, No Fly Zone, The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka which contains scenes actual scenes of abuses taken by Sri Lanka soldiers, victims and witnesses has been the bane of the Sri Lanka government since the first two evidential films appeared.

This is the second screening. The first screening organized by NGO Pusat Komas on July 3rd, was raided by officers of the Home Ministry, supported by police and immigration personnel. The Sri Lanka High Commission had requested the venue owners to cancel the screening

Today's event went smoothly. However it is claimed that 30 KDN personnel were at the venue. This reporter counted 12 standing by at the floor where the film was being screened.

They left at the end of the screening and before the Skype QnA with director Callum Macrae and subsequent sessions started.

Today's discussion lead by a panel comprising of PKR's R Sivarasa, S Ramakrishnan and M Manogaran of DAP, after the screening was focused on the next course of action for Malaysians to take to bring the Rajapaksa regime to book on alleged human rights abuses during the civil war with the separatist Tamil Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Other than persuading Prime Minister Najib Razak to not attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that will be hosted by Sri Lanka end of this year, there were calls for the economic and business boycotts as well.

In addition to the existing Parliamentary Caucus on Sri Lanka chaired by Johari Abdul, PKR MP for Sungai Petani, a secretariat will be set up comprising of civil society groups to pressure the government to support calls to bring the Sri Lanka government to the International Court of Justice for human rights abuses.
