Sand mining or extraction of sand from rivers and sea is rampant in India. The Supreme Court has put a ban on indiscriminate sand mining but powerful mining groups operate in several Indian states breaking the law.
In the southern state of Kerala where the practice is widespread a local woman has waged a lonely battle against the practice.
