“It was my Uncle’s board, but there was no soul feeling, this was life and death." In this episode of Board Stories, Hawaiian big wave charger Kalani Chapman talks through a board made for him by his legendary uncle, Owl Chapman. The 9'6" single fin was made specifically for the biggest of waves at Pipe and Kalani talks passionately about the board that let him catch him the best wave of his life.
"I faded and it just hit the reef like no other wave I had ever seen. A split second later I was knew I was going to be okay. The board was made for that wave. And I’ll call it now, I still think that was the biggest tube ever ridden at Pipe.”
This episode links a pivotal moment in modern Pipe history when all the Chapman DNA combined to produce a moment of surfing history. “Look it might happen again, but it will be hard to find a wave like. I’ll try for sure, and if it comes, hopefully I’ll be on my Uncle’s board.”
