A Nursian Response to a Humanitarian Crisis: The Migrant Deaths at the Coast of Lampedusa

Abstract

The growing refugee crisis at the Mediterranean coast has become a top issue on Europe's agenda. As this human tragedy unfolds, questions of human dignity, European identity and values, the absoluteness of borders and territories, and fears of immigrants being an economic, political and cultural burden come to the fore of the public discourse. How would a possible Nursian response to this predicament look like? What criticism and solutions can it entail? This reflection is an attempt to engage Nursi's thoughts with an urgent contemporary issue of our time and demonstrate its value and validity for public theology.
