The Interpretation of Autonomy from the Perspective of Risale-i Nur

Abstract

Autonomy, as a modern concept, can be understood as self governance and individual freedom. Besides its basic meanings, regarding this modern concept as a product of secularisation, it has deeper meaning in terms of moral philosophy.

How can we understand autonomy by looking from the perspective of Risale-i Nur? It is now being presented to us as if individual fredom can only be possible by being free from any kind of authority, from religion and from God. However, Bediüzzaman Said Nursi shows that an individual can be free by only depending on God so that being free from all other entity in the world. Especially in the 12. and 30. word, he shows that individual freedom and autonomy can only be achieved by looking from an appropriate ontological perspective towards universe and then by understanding his own nature.

After investigate the philosophical roots of autonomy in modern society, I focus on how Risale-i nur opposes this secular understanding of autonomy and considers individual freedom in relation to God.
