During the summer of 1973, Elvis Presley recorded twelve songs at the Stax Studios in Memphis and also at his home in Palm Springs for a new album.

Professionally, the previous twelve months had been triumphant for Elvis. Personally, however, he was emotionally exhausted and his impending divorce added to his world-weariness.

The tracks he recorded for the album were not inspired and the heavy-handed overdubs amplified his lack of enthusiasm: the LP "Raised On Rock" was deemed underwhelming upon its release.

In the years since his death, the original undubbed tapes have surfaced and have revealed several touching and honest performances.

Complied here as a more low-key and listenable album (with an occasional overdub and tweak) these tapes offer a better view of Elvis' artistry during this period. Recorded with a subtle nod towards the legendary Stax groove, with compositions from Lieber and Stoller, Mark James and Tony Joe White, and featuring members of the great Stax house band ...
