Em um casamento que já dura quatro anos Sara (Julia Roberts) e Martin (Patrick Bergin) personalizam o par mais perfeito, feliz e próspero, mas na realidade o marido espanca regularmente sua mulher. Assim, para escapar desta tortura diária, ela simula sua própria morte e foge para uma outra cidade, a fim de recomeçar sua vida com uma nova identidade. Após algum tempo ela se apaixona, mas seu marido descobriu indícios de que ela pode estar viva e decide encontrá-la de qualquer maneira.

In a marriage that has lasted four years Sara (Julia Roberts) and Martin (Patrick Bergin) customize the most perfect, happy and prosperous couple, but in reality her husband regularly beats his wife. So to escape this daily torture, she simulates his own death and flees to another city in order to start his life with a new identity. After a while she falls in love, but her husband found evidence that she may be alive and decides to find her anyway.
