Gunman steals jewellery worth 40 million euros in Cannes

An armed man stole jewellery worth about 40 million euros in Cannes on July 28. The theft would reportedly be the second-largest heist in France once the value of the stolen items is confirmed.
The robbery took place at jewellery exhibition held at the Carlton Hotel, located on the Croisette promenade. According to local media, a man wearing a cap and a bandana and armed with an automatic pistol stormed an exhibition of Leviev jewels that was being held at the lobby of the hotel. The thief left with several bags of jewellery and diamond watches. No injuries were reported.
The Carlton Hotel is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch a Thief, a 1955 film about a jewel thief operating in the French Riviera. The hotel was previously robbed in August 1994, when gunmen made off with jewels from its jewellery store valued at 58 million euros. Cannes was hit by two jewellery thefts during the Cannes film festival in May this year.
